PEARLS

Nearly all pearls sold today are cultured pearls.  Cultured pearls can be from saltwater or freshwater mollusks. Pearl farmers introduce a shell bead into the oyster or mussel and the mollusk deposits layers of nacre around the bead.  The type  of mussel and  inner shell of the oyster determine the color of the pearl,  but pearls can also be dyed, so color is considered a minor factor in pearl value.   The orient of a pearl is the way in which the prism of natural light breaks up in the depths of a pearl's aragonite layers. This iridescence gives the pearl all of the gloss that is modified by the colors, which range from white to black in tones of cream, pink, blue, peacock green, purple, and golden. The shape of a pearl can be either round, oval, half-round, pear shaped, circled, button-type, or baroque.  The pearl or the gemstone alexandrite is the birthstone for June .
