Alexandrite is the rare, color changing variety of chrysoberyl, BeAlO4. It is the birthstone for June. Alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia and was named for its former Czar, Alexander II. Chromium gives alexandrite its color and depending on the light source, colors can range from emerald green to amethyst violet, with some variations. It is a very durable gemstone with a hardness of 8.5 on the mohs scale. The refractive index is 1.745 to 1.757 and the crystal system is orthorhombic. We obtain larger alexandrite gemstones at the customers request. Keep in mind that we can mount any of the loose alexandrite in jewelry of your choice.
